Pentecost celebrates the coming of the Holy Spirit. With the gift of the Spirit, all things are possible. Christians mark Pentecost with the color red.
Before Jesus was crucified, he told his disciples that the Holy Spirit would come after him. Forty days after Jesus was resurrected and ten days after he ascended into heaven, that promise was fulfilled when Peter and the early Church were in Jerusalem for Pentecost. Suddenly there was the roaring sound of a mighty wind and flames of fire settled on their heads. All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues as the Spirit enabled them.
That tiny, Spirit-filled community of faith that broke from the present order has spread across the continents with incredible power to bring new things into being.
On Pentecost Sunday, May 23, 2021, we join two billion Christians worldwide to celebrate the gift of the Holy Spirit and the birth of the Jesus’ church.
Red is the church liturgical color for Pentecost. Let’s wear red on Pentecost Sunday!
